bio of a Cape Town Photographer

Photography South Africa, Cape Town Photographer

My professional life began as a freelance assistant cameraman in the UK TV industry. I cut my teeth in both the formal environment of the studio as well as the creative improvisation that is the world of the location shoot. I was privileged to serve apprenticeships with several incredible film and TV cameramen, who passed on their wisdom in the subtle arts of lighting, composition and capturing the mood of the moment to create emotional and evocative imagery. The allure of a more creative environment inspired me to leave the film industry and pursue the magic and challenge of capturing individual images. Moments captured in time became my alchemy, and Hamish Niven Photography was born.

Architectural, and interior design photography

Has allowed me to travel broadly, covering period properties in England as well as 14th Century Villas under the Tuscan Sun. Now based in South Africa, I am exploring a whole new world of contemporary design by the likes of Arthur Quinton and Stefan Antoni. This allows me privileged access to the best of what South African architecture has to offer, from exclusive villas in Camps Bay, Clifton and surrounds, to the tradition and beauty of the historical Cape Dutch winelands. On a more corporate level, Protea Hotels have provided me with an opportunity to travel around the country photographing their hotels. This is an interesting and varied project and one that has allowed me to provide them with new and great marketing imagery.

Food Photography and commercial photography

Is all understanding the clients needs and using creative photography to photograph their products and services so they look the best. Establishing great relationships with clients is the key to reaching an understanding of their needs. Then it is about the photography and the service to supply the images. From food photography to equestrian photography, we have the experience to meet your needs.

Equestrian Photography

There is something majestical about the horse - its movement, its power and poise, and also the effection and communication that goes beyondThis started as a time out hobby, as we’d breed a couple of horse, then we bred a racehorse, and then a second, so the photography became more important. With unlimited access to the Cape Town race tracks, to the parade ring, the jockeys and the actual horses, I was able to hone a skill and currently supply  equine images for several articles a month.

Arrived in Cape Town in August 2007, and promptly found work photographing villas and homes in the tourism sector, and moved up from there. With a passion and attention to detail and the understanding of clients requirements and how to convert these into marketable images that promote the clients brands and services, hamish NIVEN Photography quickly established a reputation for innovative and high quality photography.
